Not so great, save your money... Loved the first book but wasted my money on this one. Just a lot of drivel that went nowhere. I also didn’t like her digs against Trump. No need to work that into a storyline but it seems to be a trend from authors in Maine...Enjoy Olive Again! First of all, you do not have to have read Pulitzer winning, “Olive Kitterage”, or seen the Emmy winning HBO series starring Frances McDormand, to thoroughly enjoy Elizabeth Strout’s follow up, “Olive, Again”, though I predict that you will want to.The success of the book and HBO series rests on Strout’s perfectly imperfect character, Olive. She is entirely unique and readers have a variety of reactions to her, mostly contradictory because she is. She is hard-nosed somewhat stereo-typically a cold north easterner, judgmental and blunt. She is also compassionate, sarcastically witty, and loyal. I’ve always thought that it would be difficult to be friends with Olive, but worth it.“Olive, Again”, like its predecessor (and like the two “Lucy Barton” novels Strout has penned in the interim), is a collection of inter-related stories about the denizens of Crosby, Maine, particularly in relation to Olive Kitterage. We meet some familiar characters, but also a few new ones. There is a disturbing story of a young girl who cleans houses and a strange relationship that follows. I was especially touched by the continuation of a story from the first book that relates a poignant conversation between the sister of a murderer and her parent’s lawyer as she returns to Crosby and her memories of growing up there. Evidence of Olive growing as an individual is in a piece where she visits a former pupil who has cancer. I loved these conversations so much because Olive reveals a lot about her marriages. Plus, it’s quite funny! Happily, one section brings us up to date on the Burgess boys - another of Strout's novels!I didn’t think of this eleven years ago when I first “met” Olive, but this re-acquaintance has made wonder if Olive is on the “autism spectrum”. Is she ignoring social cues, or is she missing them? Is her bluntness and thoughtless disregard for “niceties” because she doesn’t understand the need for them? Several times she does show empathy and concern for others’ feelings, but these episodes seem to come as a shock to even her. In any case, Strout beautifully “grows” Olive in this wonderful new novel. I knew I needed more Olive and I am thankful that Strout did, too!It’s a fast read even though I tried to slow down and savor it! Strout is such a wonderful writer, Frances McDormand is such a wonderful actress, let’s hope another HBO series is in the works!

GREAT BOOK!!!! I picked out this book randomly a few days ago when I was bored and just wanted to ready something. At first all I expected from this book was a good and interesting story, but when I continued reading, I found it to be SO much more then that. I was deeply touched by the bravery and strength of the girl, and I actually cried several times when some of the moments really hit me. After reading this book, I finally have an idea of what is it that a lot of people are going through, and I can finally understand how hard and scary it must be for people to open up and seek help when they are being abused, sexually harassed, or something even more horrible. Before even though I've been to a lot of assemblies where people come in and talk about how most victims in these kind of situations didn't have a choice when they first started (the assemblies were most about human trafficking, although this isn't what's been discussed in the book, it somehow reminded me of this), there had always been a part of my mind that thought maybe if they really wanted to get out of it in the first place, they could have a choice. And back then, I never realized there could actually be people around me who might be going through this right now. Looking back at it now, I just realized how arrogant I was before. This book has taught me a lot, and I believe it could inspire a lot of people who are experiencing similar situations in their lives right now. And maybe the strength of the character could also give them the same courage to stand up and seek help.Empowering This book isn't a literary work of art, BUT, it is an easy and empowering read. The biggest hurdle is reading the painfully detailed descriptions of the abuse. Once you can see beyond that and enter the strength of the author- this book invites you to experience the world of misery so many people have experienced that you may never have been able to imagine. It opens your mind to why people are so intricate and individual. This book reminded me that we are all a product of our experiences and no one ever fully knows what we ourselves have experienced. This book may teach you to be more apathetic and empathetic to others or it may remind you to forgive yourself.Life with abusive parents Brooke spends her life trying to protect her younger siblings from their father's explosive anger, but she pays a special price. disappointing After hearing the author on the Joe Rogan podcast I excitedly bought the book...and then regretted it. The author went on a nauseating rant by telling us that sleep is important in 312 different ways...and yet didn't really offer any solid advice to help us get more sleep. In other words he stated the obvious, but didn't offer anything concrete or practical. I have no doubt he is an amazing sleep expert, but we all know that sleep is good for you. The challenge is figuring out how to get more of it or better quality.I'll save you the money by summarizing the book:"Sleep is really, really, really, really, really important. If you don't get enough sleep, you could have many problems because sleep is really, really, really important. I'm not going to tell you how to get better or more sleep, I will only tell you that sleep is really important."Personally, I think he's holding out on this information for his next book. Grrrrrrrr.One of the most important books I've ever read I'm about 75 pages into this book and it is already one of the most fascinating, important, and engaging books I've ever read. And it's funny, too, which was unexpected. This should be required reading by EVERYONE. After you read this book, I can't imagine how you could not prioritize getting an 8-hour night of sleep every night. Some astounding facts:-Routinely sleeping less than 6 or 7 hours a night increases your risk of cancer by 50%.-Every species every studied, preceding the emergence of vertebrates even, sleeps. Some species can sleep with only half their brain (!!). Sleep is an incredibly risky thing for an animal to do because you are completely vulnerable to predators when you sleep. But sleep is THAT important that it was preserved by evolution.-After even one night of less than 5 hours of sleep, natural killer cells (which kill cancer cells that appear in your body EVERY DAY) drop by 70%. Just one night!!!Buy it, read it, and then share it with everyone you know.Fascinating work, but the scare tactics are abused and may backfire Well researched and full of powerful anecdotes. A couple of problems stop me from enthusiastically recommend it though:1. It doesn't live up to the tile: the book is mostly a collection of facts and interesting research results and it fails to provide any kind of overarching theory of why we sleep.2. The main tool used in the book is the scare tactic: "here's what happens if sleep quality is compromised". It works, and it might even be the right approach in many cases (schools starting before 9am is simply barbaric). The problem is, for someone going though sleep troubles, this can dramatically make things worse. It took me ~6months to recover from this book.
