A must read!black women of the world, tweet! on the cover of this book is a clenched black fist with red fingernails raised, a symbol of black liberation and, for some, black militancy. the eye sees, in a quick glance, what looks like an incendiary device in that black hand and one feels fear and calls the police who respond to a black woman holding an incendiary device, and a chain of events lead to her being shot. only then is the object clutched in her hand seen as what it is, a phone.the scenario is mine, but one I could not had made were I not overwhelmed with similar real-life tragedies reported by the news media. in writing of violence against women, black women, feminista jones expands her topic to include domestic violence and street harassment.she defines herself as a social justice warrior, a black feminist for whom ‘black feminism is the key to black liberation’. she provides a history of the women in black feminism. she wages battle against white feminists, online trollers, her attackers and detractors, and discusses her own rationalizations and compromises when realizing the difficulty of personally boycotting companies that conflict with her beliefs to discover that many of the products, she uses in her home are made by the companies.the topics she discusses in her book become in the moment when she describes how black women who share their experiences by control of their content can use social media to interact across broader networks and make money while learning how to use digital media platforms, the hashtags of instagram and black twitter. feminista jones’ work within the world of digital media is an inside glimpse beyond the technological age of the early days of the internet; the sites and players and the hands-on accessibility of immediacy and real time, which have turned her into a luminary, will come as a shock for print oriented babies and television junkies. there’s a world of information and entertainment, of social activism and community, in which printed books are relics, like the scrolls of hypatia.
