Putting parents in a position to assist their children with writing My mom was very involved in my schooling, especially in the first couple of years to ensure that I had a good foundation and the start of the school was seen as positive. This book can be used by parents to assist parents when they look for ways to get their kids excited about writing and want to support them in their first year of schooling. With a variety of approaches, the book enables parents to help kids with learning to write and also makes learning to write an activity that can be done outside of school. I am not sure that the book makes these exercises necessarily fun, but knowing what difficult time my mom had finding book to help her get me started with writing, since I was a lefthander and she was writing with her right hand, this book bridges an important gap when parents look for books to help kids with school.I received a free copy from the publisher.Teaches Letter-Writing Basics But Not In A Fun, Engaging Way This workbook takes a no-nonsense approach to letter writing—written more like a school text book than other workbooks we’ve used in the past that incorporate fun formats. It also doesn’t begin with easy forming letters (Like E, T, F, or I)—Ms. Radke presents letter instruction in true alphabetical sequence, and suggests writing patterns on the top of each alphabetical page. Some suggestions conflict with the way traditional printing is taught (or was taught to me). Most people write W’s by slanting down, slanting up, slanting down, and then slanting up again—all in one fluid stroke. This workbook does not suggest that same stroke pattern, and I don’t know why. In those few instances, we simply ignore the given instructions, and follow formats that are more traditional and fluid. Practicing numbers one through ten is also included in this book.We’ve gone through many workbooks with our other children. While this one does teach letter writing basics, it doesn’t incorporate much kid appeal like some other book sources do (Kumon series comes to mind). Learning can be fun and educational—this one seems to miss the mark in that department.Good workbook for the preschool or kindergartner in your life My son (5) has been struggling with making his letters. It s something that came easily to his sister so his frustration level has been mounting (teacher "Oh, look how nice your sister writes, why can't you do this?" didn't help) I got this book to give him the opportunity to practice independently of his sister.Yes, I know you can print these online, and I have. But my son REALLY likes having his own book to pull out and tackle. The cover is thick cardboard and the pages are heavy stock paper. The binding is nice and we haven't had any problems with pages falling out even with pressing it flat.The book covers shapes, all the letters (taught with upper and lower case together like they do in school now), and numbers. There are simply photographs on each page without a lot of "clutter" so the actual practice space is maximized. One thing I really like are the little arrows and numbers to tell the child how to make the letter. My son INSISTS on starting at the bottom of the letter, this book helps him remember to start at the top most of the time, although I did find that going through and adding a little "start" dot helped even more. There is also a certificate of completion at the back of the book which my son is excited to earn and put on the fridge.If you're looking for a practice book that focuses on letter formation without a lot of fluff, this is the book for you. I recommend it wholeheartedly!

Not so great, save your money... Loved the first book but wasted my money on this one. Just a lot of drivel that went nowhere. I also didn’t like her digs against Trump. No need to work that into a storyline but it seems to be a trend from authors in Maine...Enjoy Olive Again! First of all, you do not have to have read Pulitzer winning, “Olive Kitterage”, or seen the Emmy winning HBO series starring Frances McDormand, to thoroughly enjoy Elizabeth Strout’s follow up, “Olive, Again”, though I predict that you will want to.The success of the book and HBO series rests on Strout’s perfectly imperfect character, Olive. She is entirely unique and readers have a variety of reactions to her, mostly contradictory because she is. She is hard-nosed somewhat stereo-typically a cold north easterner, judgmental and blunt. She is also compassionate, sarcastically witty, and loyal. I’ve always thought that it would be difficult to be friends with Olive, but worth it.“Olive, Again”, like its predecessor (and like the two “Lucy Barton” novels Strout has penned in the interim), is a collection of inter-related stories about the denizens of Crosby, Maine, particularly in relation to Olive Kitterage. We meet some familiar characters, but also a few new ones. There is a disturbing story of a young girl who cleans houses and a strange relationship that follows. I was especially touched by the continuation of a story from the first book that relates a poignant conversation between the sister of a murderer and her parent’s lawyer as she returns to Crosby and her memories of growing up there. Evidence of Olive growing as an individual is in a piece where she visits a former pupil who has cancer. I loved these conversations so much because Olive reveals a lot about her marriages. Plus, it’s quite funny! Happily, one section brings us up to date on the Burgess boys - another of Strout's novels!I didn’t think of this eleven years ago when I first “met” Olive, but this re-acquaintance has made wonder if Olive is on the “autism spectrum”. Is she ignoring social cues, or is she missing them? Is her bluntness and thoughtless disregard for “niceties” because she doesn’t understand the need for them? Several times she does show empathy and concern for others’ feelings, but these episodes seem to come as a shock to even her. In any case, Strout beautifully “grows” Olive in this wonderful new novel. I knew I needed more Olive and I am thankful that Strout did, too!It’s a fast read even though I tried to slow down and savor it! Strout is such a wonderful writer, Frances McDormand is such a wonderful actress, let’s hope another HBO series is in the works!

GREAT BOOK!!!! I picked out this book randomly a few days ago when I was bored and just wanted to ready something. At first all I expected from this book was a good and interesting story, but when I continued reading, I found it to be SO much more then that. I was deeply touched by the bravery and strength of the girl, and I actually cried several times when some of the moments really hit me. After reading this book, I finally have an idea of what is it that a lot of people are going through, and I can finally understand how hard and scary it must be for people to open up and seek help when they are being abused, sexually harassed, or something even more horrible. Before even though I've been to a lot of assemblies where people come in and talk about how most victims in these kind of situations didn't have a choice when they first started (the assemblies were most about human trafficking, although this isn't what's been discussed in the book, it somehow reminded me of this), there had always been a part of my mind that thought maybe if they really wanted to get out of it in the first place, they could have a choice. And back then, I never realized there could actually be people around me who might be going through this right now. Looking back at it now, I just realized how arrogant I was before. This book has taught me a lot, and I believe it could inspire a lot of people who are experiencing similar situations in their lives right now. And maybe the strength of the character could also give them the same courage to stand up and seek help.Empowering This book isn't a literary work of art, BUT, it is an easy and empowering read. The biggest hurdle is reading the painfully detailed descriptions of the abuse. Once you can see beyond that and enter the strength of the author- this book invites you to experience the world of misery so many people have experienced that you may never have been able to imagine. It opens your mind to why people are so intricate and individual. This book reminded me that we are all a product of our experiences and no one ever fully knows what we ourselves have experienced.
